Executive Summary
TSMC's October 15 results provide fresh evidence that demand for its leading-edge manufacturing remains strong. Third-quarter revenue reached $46.72 billion, above management's prior $44.6 billion–$45.8 billion guidance. The comparison is with company guidance; it should not be described as the size of an analyst-consensus beat. Prior company guidance, current results.
Management also raised expected annual dollar revenue growth to around 44%, from slightly above 40%. But gross margin declined sequentially as the latest manufacturing technology ramped. Our reading: the demand evidence improved, while the economics of expansion remain an open investment question. Focus Taiwan, management report.
Why This Matters
Investors need to distinguish customer demand from the return earned on supplying that demand.
